Malaysia 13th General Election: When International is Personal

I am not an expert on Malaysian politics. But I have so many Malaysian friends so that I know a bit more about the politics there.

I heard what happened on Malaysia 13th General Election happened last week or so. I knew it is too late to write about this now. But I still want to share my thought.

So the biggest party there, Barisan Nasional, cheated the result. At first, the opposition or Pakatan Rakyat won. After that, the government said there was a black out happen in the counting location. And then after that suddenly appeared two more ballot boxes still hadn’t been counted yet. In the end, Barisan Nasional won after the two more boxes hasn’t been counted. All happened in one day.

I also heard how Barisan Nasional hired some foreigners (which legally don’t have the right to vote) to vote for them. I also heard some other cheating mechanism done by them.

I am terribly concerned and sad with all of this. I am not Malaysian. But I do have interest in Malaysian politics because somehow I am affected by it.

I don’t like BN because of its discriminatory policy against other races beside Malay. The main policy which affect me is that a non-muslim must convert into muslim if they want to marry a muslim.

Because of this policy, my relationship with my boyfriend was disturbed. If it wasn’t because of this policy, my boyfriend’s family wouldn’t had this negative stereotype about muslim . My boyfriend’s family wouldn’t hate muslim and my relationship with him would be much smoother without him being afraid about everybody knows that we are dating.

My personal happiness has been interfered by Barisan Nasional and I am certainly not happy for the victory of some people who has interfered my personal happiness. Especially when it is a result from cheating.

It is so unique how domestic politic in other country could affect your life. Because as Chyntia Enloe said: “the personal is political and the personal is international”

So, what to do now?

Barisan Nasional is like Gollkar (Golongan Karya) Party in Indonesia during New Order / Soeharto regime ruled this country. What has made the New Order regime fell was people’s power.

All people in this world has power over government. What’s matter is how to maximize it to topple the government.

I think what Malaysia needs is big revolution like what Indonesia has passed through in 1998, or like the Arab spring. If Malaysia has gone through revolution, everything will change there.

Revolution is indeed costly so much. So many people got killed or being attacked (physically, or in Indonesia’s case, sexually), so many destruction in the city both in public places and in economy. But the change happened quicker and more radical rather than evolution or slow changes.

Malaysia has been trying the evolution. People’s fight through movement in social media, and the worst is through demonstration. Evolution might not as costly as the revolution. But the changes will happen really really slow. The fact that there has been no significant change happened in Malaysia is the proof.

I am not saying that Indonesia is perfect. In fact, corruption and bad things as New Order’s legacy still exists until now. However, Malaysia could learn from our revolution.

I am not saying that Malaysia needs the revolution that cost so many lifes. We don’t need more victims. I am sure that there must be some ways to revolt with less cost (wishing revolution with no cost is nonsense).

Long story short, Malaysia should not be satisfied with their effort as long as the change hasn’t happened. Because there are still so many ways they could tried to finally get the good governance they have been dreaming of.
